Project Aims:
There are five main aims:
1. To allow young people from the Somali diaspora to keep in
touch with their cultural heritage and provide opportunities
for them to learn the traditions of their homeland. (This
will include practical experience of traditional Somali
rural life at the Degmo Centre which should help to
strengthen the bonds of understanding with parents and
grandparents.)
2. To provide leadership skills for young people through the
appointment of a steering group who will lead workshops,
events and the collection of historical and cultural
material.
3. To research and record the cultural traditions and
personal migration histories of the Somali community in
Birmingham.
4. To celebrate and present these traditions and stories
within the community and to a wider audience through an
exhibition, DVD, website and books. 5. To enable young
people to learn new skills for researching, recording and
presenting oral history.
